Carmel Khalilian on Finding Your Purpose
In business, we often concentrate on the what and how of an enterprise. Of course these are essential factors, but we must be mindful of not leaving a crucial question unexplored. As an Architect, Urbanist and Entrepreneur, I’ve found that considering why is not just an intellectual pursuit; it’s the beating heart of an organisation, the driving force behind its journey and, as a result, I have made it central to my practice.
Reflecting on my career, I see that my more noteworthy achievements have sprung from a deep understanding of my why. My journey began at a local architecture and development firm. I unearthed a passion for collaborative design and communication across diverse stakeholders – from on-site builders to in-office engineers, and from clients to the broader community. This collaborative approach defined how I wished to work, but uncovering why I was doing it was vital.
As time went on at the development firm, I started to observe a stark contrast between the enthusiasm felt by clients and developers and the frustration felt by the communities they impacted. I realised that if one designs for people, one must place their diverse needs at the heart of the project. Bingo; I had found my why.
With my why defined, I embarked on a mission of connecting people with their built and natural environments – to balance the need for profitability with the needs of those using the spaces we develop. That mission led me to further my specialisms in urban development and planning at University College London and, ultimately, to set up my own business.
Since venturing into entrepreneurship, I have spearheaded diverse projects, championed city-wide agendas, engaged in participatory master planning, and co-designed concepts for various spaces. Alongside these endeavours, I continually revisit and reinforce my vision for why I do what I do, striving to contribute to transforming city planning alongside a network of like-minded individuals.
I have found my why, now it’s your turn. I have written a guide through the process of discovering your business’s purpose. I appreciate not all of these points will relate to your own business, but I hope it gives you some food for thought.
- Turning Purpose into Action: Solving Problems
A successful business should focus on solving real-world problems. Identify the pain points in your life or those of others that align with your purpose. Your business will inherently resonate with your audience by aiming to make a difference and offering solutions. Align your purpose with the problems you intend to solve, creating authentic connections with your customers. - Discovering your purpose is the cornerstone of building a thriving business. Your “why” is the authentic reason behind your journey, reflecting your values and beliefs. Start by introspecting your passions and the driving force that transcends mere profit. Your purpose acts as a magnetic force, attracting customers who share your values and fostering unwavering loyalty.
- Market Research: Where Purpose Meets Demand
Understanding your market and validating your idea’s potential is crucial. Dive into market research to ensure genuine demand for your product or service. Analyse competitors to uncover gaps your purpose can fill, setting your business apart. By grounding your idea in market realities, you increase the likelihood of success while staying true to your purpose. - Fostering Collaboration: The Power of Collective Purpose
Encourage collaboration and diverse perspectives during brainstorming. Surround yourself with individuals who share your purpose and promote open discussions. Embrace the collective power of “we,” leveraging your team’s insights to refine and fortify your concept. A shared sense of purpose breeds a resilient, motivated workforce that propels your vision forward. - Visualising Impact: A Guiding Light
Visualising the impact of your business idea is a potent tool for refining your purpose. Envision the positive change your product or service can bring about, both for your customers and the broader community. This practice fuels your passion, keeps you aligned with your purpose, and serves as a guiding light throughout your entrepreneurial journey. - Embracing Adaptability: The Dynamic Force of “Why”
Embrace adaptability as an essential aspect of brainstorming. Be open to refining your vision based on new information and insights, understanding that your purpose may evolve alongside your business idea. By embracing adaptability, you foster innovation and resilience, making your purpose a dynamic force that propels your success. - Discovering your purpose is a pivotal step in brainstorming a successful business idea. Infuse your concept with the essence of your “why,” identify problems that align with your purpose, validate your idea through market research, and cultivate collaboration within your team. The process of establishing your “why” is iterative, and revisiting it helps you stay aligned and adaptable amidst changing circumstances.
Visualise your venture’s impact and remain open to adapting in your pursuit of success. By incorporating these key concepts, your business idea will go beyond a mere product or service, becoming a purpose-driven journey that leaves your indelible mark on the world.

Who doesn’t love a good office gossip? Hushed conversations by the coffee machine, knowing glances across the office, colleagues who "just thought you should know" – it’s all just harmless banter, right? Not quite. While gossip might seem like an inevitable part of office life, the reality is much less entertaining. Workplace backbiting can destroy trust, drain morale, and impact team productivity. Few people understand this better than Norwegian psychotherapist Glenn Rolfsen. With over two decades of experience in psychotherapy, Glenn has dedicated his career to helping businesses tackle workplace negativity head-on. His innovative "Gozzip" method has been transforming office cultures worldwide, earning him recognition at TEDx talks and WHO conferences.
We all have bad days, right? In business, that can mean we don’t bring our A-game to work and perhaps our service slips. Maybe a dish takes too long to reach a table or a staff member sounds distracted at the till. This could lead to negative Google Reviews or on ‘that’ Facebook group that […]
Whilst Brexit hasn’t exactly been a positive event, we can’t deny that it’s also been the catalyst for diversification and change. It was a true ‘before and after’ moment that made businesses rethink their strategies and, in many cases, change their direction of travel. Gibraltar’s newest bank, justbank, is born from this process. As well as heralding the arrival of a new bank, this fresh start gave the team at IDT Finance the opportunity to create innovative and tailored banking solutions from the ground up. I met with Managing Director, Damian Asquez, and Head of Corporate Banking, Nikolai Gafan, to find out more.
With its largely service-based economy, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Gibraltar didn't have to deal with the problem of toxic waste, perhaps more commonly seen in countries reliant on manufacturing, mining and even agriculture. However, every gaming company, insurance firm, fintech organisation, retailer, restaurant, and literally every other business on the Rock is potentially responsible for producing a particularly nasty waste byproduct - e-waste.
The world of work is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the accelerating capabilities of Generative AI. While robots taking over our jobs might be a sci-fi trope, AI’s ability to learn, create, and automate tasks is undeniably impacting various industries. Generative AI is the umbrella term used to describe the type of AI that can create new content and ideas. This can include text, images, music, code and other types of content. We are now seeing how powerful this tool can be. But is this a threat or a powerful tool waiting to be harnessed? We set out to find out, what does the use of Generative AI look like in Gibraltar?
Love is big business. According to official statistics, 1,745 weddings took place in Gibraltar in 2021 followed by another 1,761 weddings in 2022 and a further 1640 in 2023. That’s around 33 weddings each week or 6 every single day. With an estimated population of around 33,000, it’s safe to say that, no, we aren’t all marrying each other, but that Gibraltar is a very popular place for many people to come and say ‘I do’. In fact, in all three years, non-residents outnumbered residents by an average of 90% to 10%. The stats point to a healthy wedding sector, one that our Minister for Tourism, Christian Santos is keen to develop. In an interview with the Gibraltar Chronicle he recently said he wanted; “Gibraltar to be the Las Vegas of Europe” when it comes to weddings. Unlike Vegas, we don’t have Elvis. But we do have John. Music legend John Lennon famously married Yoko Ono here in 1969 and put the Rock on the map for ‘Fast Track’ weddings. If music’s not your thing, acting legend Sean Connery (AKA James Bond) also tied the knot here (twice)!
Running a small business is an exciting journey, but without proper bookkeeping, it can quickly become overwhelming. Imagine trying to make critical business decisions without knowing how much money is in your account or being caught off guard by a hefty tax bill because records weren’t kept up to date. Good bookkeeping isn’t just about staying compliant; it’s about gaining control over your business, planning for growth, and avoiding costly mistakes.
Gibraltar has long been home to many international businesses. Gaming giants, UK-based insurance companies and far-flung fintech firms are all drawn here thanks to our strategic location and business-friendly environment. Carl Clavering moved his insurance business to Gibraltar, and it’s safe to say, it’s transformed his life. When I caught up with Carl, it was clear that his decision to relocate wasn't just about tax advantages or access to the UK market —it was about finding a place that felt like home, both for his business and his family.
Last month marked eight years since the UK voted to leave the European Union. I remember the exact moment I read the headline ‘UK Votes to Leave the EU’ on my phone and the feeling of shock that started to set in. My first thought was, “Er, now what?” Little did I know I would still be asking that question eight years later… Eight years of uncertainty, negotiations, grace periods, frameworks, and meticulously crafted non-statements. But still no solution.
After teaching in schools for 18 years I decided to take the plunge and embark on a self-employed life. Driven by my passion for teaching children with special educational needs I set out to discover alternative ways to make education accessible to all. My vision was to have the individual in mind, with their own strengths and challenges, and with that came the birth of ‘edYOUcation Clare Francis’; bringing the YOU into learning.

How to: Brainstorm
If you’ve been dreaming of starting your own business, you’re not alone. Data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the annual number of companies registered is edging closer to the one million mark, that’s up by 75,000 in 2022 which itself was 30,000 higher than in 2021. Whether it's following a passion, aiming for financial independence, or breaking free from the 9-5 grind, every entrepreneurial journey begins with one crucial thing: a solid idea. But coming up with that perfect idea can be tough. This is where brainstorming comes in—it’s the creative springboard that can help you turn your business dreams into reality.
Did you know that what you eat directly affects your energy levels, brain function, and stress resilience? Poor dietary habits—such as skipping meals, consuming too much caffeine, or relying on processed foods—can lead to energy crashes, brain fog, and reduced efficiency. On the other hand, a well-balanced diet stabilises blood sugar, enhances cognitive function, and keeps stress levels in check.
For many businesses, standing out from the crowd in an already crowded marketplace is a mammoth task. But for Fresquita one of the ways they tackled this issue was with highly creative packaging.

Pets are like family, right? As a proud cat dad, I’d actually go further and say that they are family. Over the years, I have spent my well-earned money on (many) toys, beds, treats and vet bills for my two feline furballs Nacho and Drake. And I am not alone. According to a recent Fortune Business Insight report, the global pet care market was valued at a massive £171.78 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow from £180.06 billion in 2023 to £269.29 billion by 2030.
