WIE+GFSB @ Climate Change Workshop
The GFSB and Women in Enterprise (WIE) took part in HMGoG’s Climate Change Strategy workshop, which brought together stakeholders from across Gibraltar to discuss how the Rock can meet net zero targets. The session highlighted how future climate policy could directly impact how businesses manage costs, resources and compliance in a post-Brexit economy.
What was discussed
Key themes included transport, waste management and the built environment:
- Transport: Proposals ranged from stricter parking controls and car club incentives, to support for e-bikes and active travel – all of which could affect commuting patterns and delivery logistics.
- Waste management: Post-Brexit rises in construction waste costs were flagged, alongside a call for more support for local repair, reuse and recycling businesses. Retailers also raised the need for clearer rules around loading and unloading.
- Built environment: Attendees called for more consistency across public and private developments, flexibility in how regulations apply to different building types, and opportunities to explore innovation – including district cooling and waste-heat recovery.
Why it matters
The message from the business community was clear: climate action must be workable and cost-efficient, offering long-term resilience and new market opportunities. Government will now review workshop input, with the possibility of modelling scenarios before publishing a revised strategy. Business engagement will continue to be key.

Freight Delays Bite
Imports including medicines, fresh produce and other commercial goods faced significant delays as businesses and Customs adjusted to the Treaty’s new frontier procedures, with some freight reportedly held since the arrangements began on 15 July. The disruption is the clearest early warning that documentation errors and unfamiliar processes can quickly affect stock availability, perishable goods and operating costs across Gibraltar’s retail and wholesale sectors.

Over the past two years, I must have written more words about the Treaty than almost any other subject. Through the Thrive EDIT, I've tried to cut through the politics and focus on what really matters to Gibraltar's business community. We've unpacked customs guidance, explained residency proposals, questioned support measures, covered Government announcements, highlighted members' concerns and, where necessary, asked awkward questions on your behalf. The aim has always been the same: to make one of the biggest economic changes in Gibraltar's history feel just a little easier to understand.
