GFSB welcomes addition of taxis and Upper Rock bus service
The GFSB welcomes the additional transport capacity provided by the new taxis on the Rock and the Upper Rock bus service that will be added to Gibraltar’s existing complement of Upper Rock transfer options. The GFSB has regularly commented that the loss of the cable car service, which annually carries in excess of 300,000 people to our prime tourist attraction, needs to be addressed, as it will be out of action for a two-year period, at a time when visitors to the Rock might very well increase. These measures go some way to addressing the transport issue, and we hope that they will mark the beginning of a process of further improving and expanding Gibraltar’s ports of entry and transport infrastructure.
Whilst the GFSB welcomes these additions, we are also writing to the Minister responsible for the Environment to understand precisely what processes and procedures have led to these arrangements being put in place. It is important to ensure that all tourist facing businesses have the same opportunity to provide services to the public and tourists, and receive equal access to Government finance of equipment, vehicles, and entrance fee rebates.
GFSB welcomes CCTV rollout
The rollout of CCTV cameras across Main Street will go some way to addressing fears expressed by GFSB members about a recent uptick in burglaries. This expanded surveillance, alongside an already increased police presence, represents a practical and visible step towards strengthening security in Gibraltar’s principal commercial area. Taken together, these measures are likely to provide reassurance to both businesses and consumers, and to assist in both deterrence and enforcement.
These developments follow a series of recent meetings facilitated by the GFSB with the newly appointed Commissioner for Police, as well as the Minister for Business, bringing together retail members to discuss the issues directly. These meetings have provided an important platform for members to raise concerns and for the authorities to outline their operational response, with a clear focus on collaboration and practical outcomes. The increased police presence and CCTV deployment reflect that engagement and the commitment to maintaining a safe and secure trading environment.
Beautification of Main Street, Chatham Counterguard and Casemates Square
Some weeks ago, the GFSB was invited to attend a high-level presentation in relation to the intended works that the Government proposes to carry out to beautify Casemates Square, Main Street and Chatham Counterguard. The presentation provided an overview of a number of proposed enhancements aimed at improving the aesthetic and functional appeal of these key commercial and tourist areas.
The GFSB looks forward to the publication of these plans, which represent another exciting element of Gibraltar’s post-Brexit development strategy, as we seek to enhance the tourist offering, improve the retail experience, and elevate the overall look and feel of our urban environment.
