Q&A: Lili Olivero

If you’ve launched something new, original or impactful in Gibraltar, now’s your chance to put it in the spotlight. The GFSB and Gibtelecom are inviting entries for the 2025 Business Innovation Award, a prize that celebrates first-to-Gibraltar ideas and the people behind them.

To inspire this year’s hopefuls, we caught up with last year’s winner, Lili Olivero, founder of Green Wave and the Eco Loyalty Rewards Programme, to talk about the experience and what winning meant for her and her business.

How did it feel to win the GFSB Business Innovation Award?

Winning the GFSB Business Innovation Award was amazing and an incredible honour. It felt like a real validation of all the hard work, creativity and risks we put into developing something new and impactful. It gave us a real boost to keep pushing boundaries. It was also really nice to be publicly recognised for something that started as a very small idea and grew into something much bigger. I felt proud of what we had accomplished and grateful for the opportunity to share our story with a wider audience.

What was the experience of applying and presenting like?

It was fantastic. The process was well organised, and I really appreciated the opportunity to present our project to a panel of judges who clearly cared about innovation and progress in Gibraltar. They asked insightful questions that challenged us to think even deeper about our impact and future plans. It pushed me out of my comfort zone. I do not enjoy public speaking but it was a good reminder of how important it is to be able to confidently share your mission and vision with others.

Has the award made a difference to your business?

Absolutely. Beyond the recognition, it gave us credibility that opened doors and started conversations. People have reached out purely because they saw we had won. It helped raise awareness about our work and led to new collaborations. It has also boosted our visibility, which is so important when you’re trying to grow something from the ground up. I would say it has helped us grow in really valuable ways, both personally and professionally.

Would you recommend others apply?

Without a doubt. The process helps you to refine your vision and communicate it clearly, which is valuable even if you do not win. The exposure and opportunities are worth it alone. Plus, it is a brilliant way to meet and connect with other people in the business community. If you are serious about your business and passionate about innovation, this experience can really move you forward. It is an incredible opportunity and I would definitely encourage others to go for it.

Think your business has what it takes?

If Lili’s words haven’t edged you closer to the application form, I am not sure what else will! Give it a go and Apply for the 2025 Business Innovation Award

For many SMEs, the success of the business has been built on the expertise, relationships and commitment of its owner. This entrepreneurial approach has been instrumental in the growth of many of Gibraltar's successful businesses. However, as organisations develop, dependence on a single individual can become a strategic risk.

Imports including medicines, fresh produce and other commercial goods faced significant delays as businesses and Customs adjusted to the Treaty’s new frontier procedures, with some freight reportedly held since the arrangements began on 15 July. The disruption is the clearest early warning that documentation errors and unfamiliar processes can quickly affect stock availability, perishable goods and operating costs across Gibraltar’s retail and wholesale sectors.

For many, summer offers something that's in short supply during the rest of the year: space. Space to learn, think differently, meet new people and recharge before the final push towards year-end. If you're looking to make the most of the season, here are three ways to return in September with fresh ideas, renewed energy and a few new connections.

Over the past two years, I must have written more words about the Treaty than almost any other subject. Through the Thrive EDIT, I've tried to cut through the politics and focus on what really matters to Gibraltar's business community. We've unpacked customs guidance, explained residency proposals, questioned support measures, covered Government announcements, highlighted members' concerns and, where necessary, asked awkward questions on your behalf. The aim has always been the same: to make one of the biggest economic changes in Gibraltar's history feel just a little easier to understand.

At the GFSB, we believe membership should deliver real value. That means more than simply representing businesses around the table. It means creating opportunities to learn, connect and grow. Since September 2025, we've delivered 34 events attended by 1,329 members and guests, with the vast majority offered free of charge as part of GFSB membership. Whether you're looking to sharpen your skills, grow your network or stay ahead of the issues shaping Gibraltar's business landscape, our events are designed to make doing business that little bit easier.
