On Thursday the 31st October 2024, a bill was published in the Gibraltar Gazette to propose an Act to amend the Register of Property Occupation Act 2021 (the “Bill”). Following on from the Chief Minister’s budget speech, HMGoG has proposed amendments to the Register of Property Occupation Act 2021 to regulate short-term rentals, particularly those offered via platforms like Airbnb. This move aims to balance the growth of short-term rentals with fair competition for hotels while ensuring property safety and quality standards.
Why does this matter?
This move reflects a growing need to manage the rapid growth of short-term rentals, balancing economic benefits with consumer protection. By setting clear guidelines, the government hopes to maintain property standards while addressing the competitive dynamics between rental platforms and traditional accommodations.

Could Gibraltar be missing a golden opportunity? GFSB Board Director Brian Ross believes the answer is yes. In this thought-provoking opinion piece, he argues that Gibraltar should consider a residency route for financially self-sufficient individuals, attracting experienced people with the wealth, expertise and international networks to strengthen our economy. Could this be the next step in keeping Gibraltar competitive?
For many SMEs, the success of the business has been built on the expertise, relationships and commitment of its owner. This entrepreneurial approach has been instrumental in the growth of many of Gibraltar's successful businesses. However, as organisations develop, dependence on a single individual can become a strategic risk.
